Cancún, Quintana Roo — A man was attacked by a crocodile while snorkeling in the waters of the Nichupté Lagoon, ignoring safety warnings that prohibit swimming in this area of Cancún, a natural habitat for these reptiles.
The incident, captured on video by witnesses, shows a specimen of the Crocodylus acutus crocodile species lunging at the bather who was submerged in the body of water.
Eyewitnesses stated that the man, whose identity remains unknown, was repeatedly warned by several people about the imminent danger of swimming in the lagoon, where previous attacks have been recorded due to the high presence of these reptiles.
Fortunately, the man survived the attack and, although it is unknown if he sustained any injuries, he will be able to recount his experience.
Following the event, environmental authorities reiterated to the local population and tourists the urgency of respecting the restricted zones and warning signage at the Nichupté Lagoon. They reminded the public that the presence of crocodiles is part of the ecological balance of the protected natural area and that entering the water to swim represents a mortal risk.
The bather’s recklessness underscores the importance of adhering to safety regulations to prevent this type of dangerous encounter with local wildlife.
