Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Telly Robert Caamal Hau, the deputy director of Transit for the municipality of Cozumel, died late Friday night following a severe car accident in the Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez neighborhood of Chetumal, the state capital.
The incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. on the intersection of Sicilia and Camelias streets. Preliminary reports indicate that Caamal Hau was traveling in a white Chevrolet Aveo with license plates from the state of Chiapas, allegedly driven by his escort, identified as Manuel F. C.
Excessive Speed and Loss of Control
According to witnesses and authorities, the driver was speeding and failed to yield at a speed bump, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The car then collided with a coconut palm tree.
The impact was so forceful that both occupants were ejected from the vehicle. Caamal Hau became trapped beneath the car, while an 18-year-old female passenger sustained injuries, including a suspected fracture to her right knee.
Fatal Outcome Despite Medical Efforts
Emergency responders transported both individuals to Chetumal General Hospital. However, Caamal Hau succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival due to their severity.
The driver, Manuel F. C., fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle. Authorities from the State Attorney General’s Office secured the car and have opened an investigation to determine liability and clarify the circumstances of the crash.
Possible Prior Incident Under Investigation
Sources close to the investigation revealed that the vehicle may have been fleeing the scene of an earlier accident in the same area before the fatal crash occurred.
Municipal Leader Offers Condolences
On Saturday morning, Cozumel Mayor José Luis Chacón expressed his condolences via social media.
“On behalf of the municipal government and the entire Cozumel community, I extend my deepest sympathies to his family, especially the Caamal Serralta family. May they find strength during this irreparable loss,” he wrote.
The case remains under investigation by state authorities.
