2024 Astri Cozumel Triathlon: Cozumel’s Rise as a Sports Hub”

Cozumel's municipal president, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, has successfully sustained and enhanced the organization of sports events on the island, establishing Cozumel as a sports hub. This past weekend, the twelfth annual "AsTri Cozumel 2024 Triathlon" took place, featuring 800 competitors from around the globe. The event was held at Chankanaab Park and generated an estimated economic revenue of 35 million pesos.

The event was officially started by Municipal President Juanita Alonso, who was joined by Harbor Captain, Víctor Manuel Lozano, Fifteenth Naval Zone Commander, Fernando de Jesús Gesserit, and Pablo Alfonso Aguilar Torres, a representative of the Quintana Roo Tourist Promotion Council (CPTQ) in Cozumel.

In the "Elite" category, Mexican triathletes Dylan Campa Carranza and Sara Roel López took first place. Iván Anzaldo No and Uzziel Valderrabano Chávez secured second and third place in the male category, while Selene Martínez Ávila and Rebeca Sofía Rivera Franco filled the remaining spots on the women's podium.

The elite triathletes competed in the "Sprint" distance, which included 750 meters of swimming, 20 kilometers of cycling, and 5 kilometers of running. The "Olympic" category participants covered 1.5 kilometers of swimming, 40 kilometers of cycling, and 10 kilometers of running. The "Super Sprint" consisted of 400 meters of swimming, 10 kilometers of cycling, and 2.5 kilometers of running. A children's competition was also held in the "3Kids" category, where the youngest participants had their first taste of triathlon competition.

The event kicked off at 6:30 a.m. with the Junior (14 to 15 years), Super Sprint, and Woman Up categories. The Olympic competition began at 7:00 a.m. for both male and female participants, followed by the children's competition at 12:15 p.m.

The "AsTri Cozumel" is part of a premium series primarily aimed at amateur athletes, but also includes elite triathletes. This event underscores Cozumel's dedication to sports, sports tourism, and local economic growth. It attracts both national and international visitors, reinforcing its reputation as a top destination for overnight tourism and world-class sports events.
