Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities have suspended two police officers after video footage showed them allegedly using excessive force against two women, including an elderly woman, during an eviction operation earlier this month.

Cozumel Mayor José Luis Chacón condemned the officers’ actions and ordered their immediate removal from duty following the circulation of videos showing the March 3 incident. The footage appears to show the officers failing to follow proper protocols during an eviction procedure, with witnesses reporting they used physical force and pepper spray to remove the women from a residence.

“We will follow this case closely because Cozumel residents are accustomed to good treatment, and we cannot accept mistreatment, especially toward women,” Chacón said during a press conference.

The videos quickly spread on social media, sparking outrage among local residents who demanded justice and exemplary punishment for those involved. The incident occurred when police responded to provide security during what authorities described as an eviction operation.

The Cozumel Department of Public Security has launched an investigation, and the case has been referred to the police department’s Honor and Justice Council, which will determine final sanctions once the inquiry concludes. The municipal government emphasized it will not tolerate actions that violate human dignity or threaten the island’s social peace.

Local officials stressed that such conduct “tarnishes” the institution and undermines citizens’ integrity, promising thorough follow-up to ensure accountability.
