Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The island of Cozumel has welcomed over 1 million cruise passengers in the first two months of 2026, marking an 18% increase compared to the same period last year.

According to reports from the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo and the General Directorate of Ports, as of March 11, the destination recorded 330 cruise ship arrivals in the first 59 days of the year. This growth confirms Cozumel’s position as Mexico’s leading cruise port and one of the most important in the Caribbean.

In 2025, the island closed with approximately 4.7 million passengers and over 1,300 arrivals, one of the highest figures in its recent history. With the current growth rate, tourism authorities project Cozumel could surpass 5 million cruise passengers by the end of 2026, supported by major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival, which are based in Miami.

Cruise activity represents a key economic driver for the island, generating business for local commerce, tours, tourist transportation, restaurants, and recreational services. These sectors rely heavily on the steady flow of international visitors.

The increase also highlights strong demand for the Mexican Caribbean within global cruise routes, where Cozumel maintains a strategic position alongside other Western Caribbean ports.

While environmental groups celebrate the definitive cancellation of a fourth cruise pier in Cozumel, business voices argue that reversing a federal authorization sends a message of uncertainty for investments.
