Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — It’s official: Costco is coming to Playa del Carmen. The global retail giant has confirmed plans to open a new store in one of Mexico’s most dynamic coastal destinations, sending a wave of excitement through the Riviera Maya.
The announcement was made by Costco Mexico’s Chief Financial Officer, who confirmed that the new branch will be built within the municipality of Playa del Carmen. The location—already a favorite among both locals and international visitors—will become the company’s second store in Quintana Roo, following the success of its busy Cancún warehouse.
While the exact site and opening date have yet to be revealed, anticipation is already high. Residents have long hoped for a Costco closer to home, avoiding the trek to Cancún for bulk shopping and imported goods.
The Playa del Carmen project forms part of Costco’s 2025–2026 expansion plan, which also includes new stores in Tampico, Durango, and Mexico City. With the addition of Playa del Carmen, Costco will bring its total number of stores in Mexico to 44, underscoring its growing footprint in one of the country’s fastest-growing regions.
For many Riviera Maya residents, this isn’t just another store opening—it’s a milestone that reflects Playa del Carmen’s continued growth and appeal as both a residential hub and a retail powerhouse.
