Cancún, Mexico — The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has confirmed that water samples taken from areas affected by sargazo seaweed along the coast pose no health risks to the public. The announcement was made by Javier Francisco Toledo, Cofepris’s central region coordinator, who stated that tests conducted in coastal zones and cenotes (natural sinkholes) in the region showed no evidence of contamination.

Extensive Sampling and Ongoing Monitoring

Toledo explained that the sampling efforts were part of pre-summer high-season operations, with continued surveillance planned throughout the vacation period, particularly in high-traffic beaches and recreational areas. The agency’s sanitary vigilance operations will also extend to food vending zones to ensure the safety of tourists and residents.

Cozumel Beaches Meet International Standards

The report emphasized that both public and private beaches in Cozumel comply with international water quality standards, making them safe for swimmers. Toledo noted that recent tests during the current vacation period showed optimal levels of coliform bacteria, ensuring a healthy environment for beachgoers. He added that beaches across Quintana Roo meet established sanitary parameters, allowing visitors and locals to enjoy the ocean without concern.

Contrasting Findings in Tulum Cenotes

The announcement follows a separate, confidential scientific study by a leading oceanographic institute, which revealed contamination in Tulum’s cenotes due to wastewater from luxury hotels and real estate developments.

Cofepris’s findings provide relief to the tourism industry and visitors amid ongoing concerns about sargazo’s environmental and economic impact. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining rigorous health standards during peak travel seasons.
