Mexico’s Ruling Coalition Unites Behind “Plan B” Reform

Mexico City — Following turbulent weeks marked by the rejection of a broader electoral reform, the national leadership of the ruling "Let's Continue Making History" coalition has expressed unanimous support for an alternative "Plan B." The leaders of Morena, the Labor Party (PT), and the Green Party (PVEM) met at the Ministry of the Interior to present a unified front, announcing the initiative will arrive at Congress this week.

In a joint statement, the leaders and legislative coordinators from both chambers reiterated their support for measures aimed at eliminating privileges for the "golden bureaucracy" in local congresses and municipalities. The plan also includes changes related to popular consultations and the recall of mandate.

Luisa María Alcalde, national leader of Morena, stated that this moment is historic for settling a debt with the people of Mexico. According to Alcalde, the current electoral system was designed to maintain a vast distance between power and citizens. She said the new proposal reflects a desire for a more austere, fair, and truly representative democracy by optimizing public resources from the municipal level.

A key point highlighted was the restructuring of city councils and local congresses. The proposal seeks to establish financial limits and reduce the number of council seats and trusteeships, which, according to Morena's leadership, were often filled based on political quotas rather than citizens' needs. "Less bureaucracy means more resources for works and infrastructure in the states," Alcalde emphasized.

Karen Castrejón, national leader of the Green Party, stressed that her legislators will support the reform under the premise of ending "superfluous waste." Castrejón emphasized that "Plan B" is not only a cost-saving measure but also a tool to strengthen citizen participation. "We in the Green Party support Plan B, promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum, because it represents an important step to strengthen our democracy and continue consolidating a more efficient and less costly state," she stated.

Alberto Anaya, leader of the Labor Party, called for unity around President Sheinbaum, warning that Mexico currently faces not only internal adversaries but also external threats that require a united nation. The PT leader assured that his party's commitment is total in the face of any attempt at destabilization.

However, the PT clarified that "Plan B" has been thoroughly reviewed to avoid undermining the democratic progress achieved between 1977 and 1996. The party emphasized that President Sheinbaum’s reform is "careful" in maintaining the rules of plurality and equity that allowed for the historic victory in 2018 and the continuity of the project in 2024. "Those rules must be preserved and this reform ensures that they are not affected," Anaya stated.

Ricardo Monreal, coordinator of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies, stated that the coalition is now returning to the path of unity. "The transformation does not stop. The will of the people is clear, and our commitment is unwavering. We will continue building a fairer, more democratic country with greater opportunities for everyone. In the decisive moments of history, politics demands vision, conviction, and responsibility. This is one of those moments, and we are up to the challenge," he stated.

With this endorsement, the ruling coalition is preparing the legislative ground for the initiative, which is expected to reach the Congress of the Union this week.
