Chikungunya Cases Confirmed in Quintana Roo After Years

Quintana Roo, Mexico — Chikungunya has returned to Quintana Roo after several years without official records, following confirmation of a new infection by the Secretary of Health during the most recent epidemiological week.

With this case, the state now totals five infections in 2025, making it the state with the highest number of confirmed cases nationwide.

According to reports, four of the cases correspond to men and one to a woman. Regionally, the Yucatán Peninsula has accumulated six infections, while Chiapas reports one additional case, bringing the national total to seven this year.

Chikungunya and Conditions Favoring Its Reappearance

Specialists from the State Health Services (Sesa) warn that the return of chikungunya is closely related to high dengue circulation and the widespread presence of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Recent rains and high temperatures have created a favorable environment for vector reproduction.

This uptick contrasts with 2024, when no cases were reported, confirming the re-emergence capacity of mosquito-borne diseases when favorable environmental conditions exist.

Health Surveillance and Timely Attention

Health authorities emphasize that, although detected cases are isolated, constant symptom monitoring and early medical attention are fundamental to avoid complications, especially in children, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses.

The state government maintains coordination with federal agencies to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and precise tracking of possible new infections.

Citizen Prevention and Social Risk

As part of preventive measures, the use of repellents and mosquito nets is promoted, but primarily the elimination of breeding sites through proper management of stagnant water in homes and public spaces.

Authorities note that the return of chikungunya also implies a social and economic challenge, as an increase in cases could impact productivity and the perception of health security in a state whose economy depends largely on tourism.
