Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Port Captaincy of Chetumal has opened registration for a basic safety training course for tourist service providers, a requirement for those operating vessels carrying visitors.

Román Bustos Gómez, head of the Port Captaincy, said the course is a prerequisite for obtaining the type “C” seaman’s book, which is essential for maritime tourism workers involved in transporting and attending to local, national, and international tourists.

Registration will remain open until July 10. Interested parties must submit their documents at the Port Captaincy office.

“The training is promoted by the port authority in coordination with the Maritime and Port University of Mexico, so we invite all service providers to participate; there is still time to sign up,” Bustos said.

The goal is to strengthen the safeguarding of human life at sea and improve the preparedness of personnel operating aboard tourist vessels, he added.

Although the venue and exact date have yet to be determined — they will depend on the number of registrants — the course will cost 352 pesos and last two days. Requirements include a birth certificate, CURP (unique population registry code), official ID, tax status certificate, and a medical certificate issued by a public health institution, both in print and digital formats.

Bustos emphasized that the training aims to professionalize the maritime tourism sector in the region and ensure that personnel have basic knowledge of safety, prevention, and emergency response while providing services at sea.
