Chetumal Pier Restaurant Closes, Space Available for Lease

The commercial space at Chetumal's fiscal pier that remains vacant after a restaurant closure.

Chetumal, December 27. The Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo) acknowledged that the project to boost economic activity in the upper part of the Chetumal maritime terminal, through the leasing of a commercial space, has not been consolidated and remains, for now, only an intention. The expectation was that this space would become a new attraction point for visitors and local residents, strengthening coexistence and the dynamism of the fiscal pier, one of the busiest sites in the capital.

According to official information, the property was concessioned for five years to a businessman who met the requirements established by the General Coordination of Ports and was up to date with his obligations. However, the individual decided to abandon the facilities and close the restaurant that had been operating since last year, considering that the project was not profitable, leaving the space without commercial activity once again.

Apiqroo explained that the space remains available for anyone interested in leasing it as a restaurant, under a scheme similar to that applied in other maritime terminals in the state, such as Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. The purpose, they emphasized, is for the pier to not only be a transit point but also a family meeting place, taking advantage of the privileged view and the constant flow of people who come to the area.

The agency highlighted that, in general, the piers under its administration maintain a high level of occupancy, with around 90 percent of the spaces leased and functioning as craft shops, pharmacies, cafeterias, or convenience stores. Apiqroo stated that there is permanent supervision to ensure that the spaces are kept in good condition and comply with contractual guidelines, so the case of the Chetumal pier represents an exception within the port commercial utilization scheme.
