Chemuyil Residents Request Waste Collection Center to Combat Illegal Dumping

Residents of Chemuyil meeting with Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo to discuss waste management issues

Chemuyil, Quintana Roo — Residents of the Chemuyil community have asked Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo to establish a formal collection center for managing bulky waste and discarded items to prevent illegal dumping in public spaces.

During a meeting with the mayor, community members explained the need for a designated location where they can dispose of old furniture, appliances, and other unusable items. They want to stop these materials from ending up on streets or vacant lots.

Oscar, a local resident, urged the municipal government to allocate a specific site for concentrating such waste. He also highlighted an existing open-air dump, which he said poses environmental and health risks for the community.

In response, Mayor Castañón Trejo ordered cleanup operations in several properties where garbage has accumulated, including the removal of discarded items and abandoned vehicles.

He urged residents to avoid dumping trash on streets and vacant lots, warning that such practices cause pollution, attract pests, and create urban blight.

The request comes as various communities in the municipality face challenges with solid waste management. If implemented, a collection center in Chemuyil would provide an organized alternative for disposing of bulky waste and help maintain cleaner public spaces.
