Mexico — The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) offers a low-cost internet package priced at 510 pesos for six months of service. The package, which includes 5 GB of data per month, is designed for browsing on either a computer or a mobile phone and is promoted as one of the utility company's most affordable options.
Service Provided Through Portable Modem
The internet service is delivered through a compact, portable modem provided by CFE. The device is small enough to fit into a pants pocket. Despite its size, the modem can connect a computer or cell phone to internet service supplied by the network operator Altan, which CFE describes as fast and secure.
The six-month plan for 510 pesos is listed among several available packages and provides users with a monthly data allowance of 5 GB.
Browsing Capacity and Practical Use
A monthly allocation of 5 GB provides users with approximately 50 hours of online browsing time. This capacity supports basic online activities such as sending emails, using chat applications, viewing social networks, listening to music, and watching the occasional high-resolution video.
The service is characterized as suitable for everyday cell phone use and is presented as an ideal solution for maintaining an internet connection while traveling across much of the country where the service has coverage.
Enrollment Process and Modem Setup
To subscribe to this or any CFE internet package, a customer must first purchase a dedicated MiFi modem. The modem costs 1,145 pesos, a fee that includes the first month of service with 5 GB of data and shipping costs.
After the first month, customers can then purchase the six-month plan for 510 pesos. This plan is listed as one of the primary options available in the MiFi section of the CFE's official website. The purchase process involves adding a SIM card to the shopping cart on the website and subsequently topping up the account balance from the same site.
Setup of the modem is described as simple, requiring no complex installation. The device operates independently with the included SIM card and a rechargeable battery; a charging cable is provided with the modem. To begin use, a customer opens the back cover of the modem to insert the SIM card and the battery. The modem is then turned on using the "Power" button, after which devices can connect to the internet via the modem's WiFi signal.
