Cancún, Mexico — With a focus on November, Cancún’s Teatro de la Ciudad is undergoing a series of renovations and reactivations of key spaces to host the 45th Muestra Nacional de Teatro (National Theater Showcase), one of the country’s most important theatrical events.

Óscar López, director of the venue, confirmed that the theater will serve as the central hub for the event. Upgrades are underway in the main building as well as adjacent areas, including the Centro Cultural de las Artes, which had been inactive following previous remodeling work.

Comprehensive Renovations Underway

“We are installing new air conditioning systems, repairing the galleries, and preparing workshop rooms. Everything must be ready by November because this space will host activities such as book fairs, workshops, and at least two daily theatrical performances,” López explained.

Revitalizing the "Black Box"

Another space set for rehabilitation is the experimental “Black Box” theater, a smaller venue within the complex that had remained unused due to a lack of wooden flooring and proper furnishings. The goal is to make this space adaptable for diverse theatrical formats.

López noted that work is already in progress, citing the recent arrival of climate control equipment to be installed in the coming weeks.

A National Showcase of Theater

The 45th Muestra Nacional de Teatro will take place from November 6 to 15, featuring nearly 30 productions from across Mexico. At least 10 of these performances will be held at the Teatro de la Ciudad, with additional venues including the “8 de Octubre” Theater, the “Cancún” Theater, and even open-air locations like Puerto Juárez.

“The diversity of the productions demands that we consider unconventional stages beyond traditional theaters. We want Cancún to experience theater in all its forms,” López concluded.
