Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Benito Juárez municipal government has launched a cultural and commemorative agenda to mark Cancún’s 56th anniversary, with a focus on strengthening local identity, honoring the city’s pioneers, and preserving historical memory through a series of events scheduled throughout April.

As part of the initiative, officials announced a campaign to collect and share testimonies from Cancún’s earliest residents. This material will be published on digital platforms to create a living archive documenting the city’s history from the perspective of those who helped build it.

Carlos del Castillo, from Distrito Cancún, detailed that the event budget is approximately 8 million pesos. Activities will kick off on April 10 with the “Mi identidad” mural workshop for children and youth in Supermanzana 22. The following day, a special edition of the Rutamar program—which promotes access to public beaches—will include activities centered on community pride under the “Soy Cancún, soy cancunense” campaign.

The agenda also features events such as the “56 años de historias en Cancún” discussion, walking tours, and the Paseo Cancunense on April 12, along with the “Todos somos agua” exhibition on April 16. That exhibition will showcase works by pioneers and local artists as part of a collective memory exercise.

The program continues with a floral tribute to the city’s founders, a commemorative parade along Avenida Tulum, and a large-scale concert by Los Ángeles Azules on April 19, accompanied by what organizers are calling “Cancún’s biggest picnic.” The next day, city chronicler Fernando Martí noted that a solemn session will include the presentation of the Sigfrido Paz Paredes Medal for Civic Merit. After 13 nominations, the award was unanimously granted to architect Carlos Constandse.

The calendar concludes with a discussion on the history of soccer in Cancún—timed with the World Cup year—and the presentation of the book “El Primer Cancún,” a compilation of testimonies from discussions held last year.

Carlos del Castillo emphasized that this agenda aims to solidify a sense of identity, particularly among younger generations, and position Cancún as a city that recognizes and preserves its history.
