Cancún, Mexico — The municipal government of Benito Juárez is developing a new digital platform that will allow residents and visitors to monitor the condition of Cancún’s beaches in real time, including sargassum presence and flag warnings indicating swimming conditions.
Public Access to Beach Conditions
Mayor Ana Paty Peralta announced that the platform will be fully public and provide detailed information, such as flag colors signaling water safety and lifeguard schedules, which have been extended until 7 p.m. this season due to high tourist traffic.
“This is a public platform. It’s nearly ready, and it will be updated with our monitoring data so everyone can access it,” Peralta said. “We’re ensuring people know what flag warnings are in place at our beaches, and we’re also adding a sargassum traffic light system. If a Cancún resident or visitor wants to know which beach to visit on their day off, they can check the platform and avoid arriving at, say, Playa Delfines, only to find sargassum.”
Inspired by Global Models
The mayor noted that the system draws inspiration from real-time monitoring tools used in other tourist destinations, such as Barcelona, Spain, and Miami, USA, where such platforms help the public plan safer and more efficient beach visits.
The initiative aims to enhance transparency and convenience for both locals and tourists while addressing the recurring challenge of sargassum influxes along Quintana Roo’s coastline.
