Cancún, Mexico — The resort city of Cancún has been selected as the national launch site for the new biometric version of Mexico’s Unique Population Registry Code (CURP), a modernized identification system designed to enhance security and efficiency.

Announcement Set for August 8

Cristina Torres Gómez, Secretary of Government for Quintana Roo, confirmed that Cancún will serve as the venue for unveiling the guidelines and implementation framework for the new system. The announcement will take place on August 8 during a national meeting of civil registry directors from all 32 Mexican states.

Torres Gómez emphasized that unlike the INE voter ID—currently used as the primary identification document despite not being originally intended for that purpose—the biometric CURP will incorporate advanced technological safeguards, including iris scans and fingerprints from both hands.

Voluntary Initial Phase

The official clarified that the first phase of the rollout will be entirely voluntary for those already registered in the system. The new document will not be mandatory for government or educational procedures.

“It will function like a passport or driver’s license. You can present any of those documents or your INE card. The key advantage of the biometric CURP is that it will streamline processes that are currently slower,” she stated.

Emergency Response Benefits

Among its benefits, Torres Gómez highlighted that the system could expedite locating individuals in emergencies by eliminating reliance on lengthier procedures, such as sending fingerprints to the INE for verification.

“We would have a direct state system enabling faster action,” she noted.

While the project has faced criticism from some sectors, the secretary affirmed its goal is to provide greater certainty and efficiency in official identification, aligning with international standards.
