Cancún, Mexico — The “Andrés Quintana Roo” taxi union has proposed to the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (IMOVEQROO) to update and improve their service prices, which have not been regulated in over eight years. Cancún will begin 2026 with taximeters.
Cancún taxi drivers, through the “Andrés Quintana Roo” union, announced this week that they have found a new way to end their dissatisfaction and conflict with transportation apps like Uber by implementing the use of taximeters in the municipality.
Unlike other municipalities, or even the rest of the country, Cancún has never attempted to regulate taxi services through taximeters, as this part of the country was accustomed to having zone-based fare charts divided on a map that helped set the cost of trips.
However, over the years this practice has no longer been to the liking of either tourists or locals themselves, as in 2025 Cancún’s transportation services were highly damaged by complaints from Mexicans and foreigners who claimed exorbitant charges in dollars for 10 to 20 minute stretches during their vacations.
When Will Taximeters Be Implemented in Cancún?
According to the proposal given by the taxi union to IMOVEQROO, it will be in the first quarter of 2026 when taximeters will be gradually implemented in some units to support the strategy of the State Mobility Law that will help regulate prices and the high demand that taxi apps have.
The price of the “flag drop” has not been announced; however, on social media, citizens of the Benito Juárez municipality began asking municipal president Ana Paty Peralta not to allow the initial base cost to be in dollars or exceed 500 pesos.
What Other Improvements Will Cancún Taxi Services Have?
The leaders of the Cancún taxi union have planned several service improvements to offer more updated treatment to those who visit the municipality and at the same time stay at the forefront of the benefits of transportation services like Uber, so they will begin to have:
- Card or QR payments
- Live route viewing and the ability to share it
With these new changes, the Quintana Roo Government and taxi drivers hope to finally bring some peace to the constant struggle that occurred with transportation apps that were gaining ground at the Airport and different tourist stops in the municipality. A problem that led to violence between drivers, threats, and loss of confidence among visitors.
