Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Cancún taxi union “Andrés Quintana Roo” has proposed launching a pilot program to install meters in 500 vehicles, pending approval from the State Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo).

Rubén Carrillo Buenfil, the union’s general secretary, said the program would initially focus on “ruleteros” — taxis that operate throughout the urban area and cover longer distances.

After months of negotiations and technical adjustments, the union expects these vehicles to begin using the new payment system in the first quarter of the year, once final details are settled with Imoveqroo.

Officials still need to verify precise calibration of per-kilometer and per-minute rates and conduct pilot tests on actual routes to ensure accurate fares.

Carrillo Buenfil emphasized that the goal is to provide “price certainty” for passengers, eliminating discretionary pricing and ensuring fair payment that benefits both riders and drivers.

The meters will feature advanced functions including real-time GPS monitoring and card payment processing to meet current market needs.

Regarding deployment strategy, Carrillo Buenfil said implementation will be gradual. In this first phase, the system will exclusively target “ruleteros,” which represent about 50% of the union’s total fleet of 8,000 taxis.

Finally, the secretary noted that the investment required for the equipment is “considerable,” so the union has proposed a cost-sharing scheme between the organization and its members.
