Cancún, Quintana Roo — Approximately 700 body-worn cameras for officers of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit are scheduled to begin operating between August 11 and 12, according to Benito Juárez Municipal President Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña.

Enhanced Accountability Through Technology

Peralta de la Peña stated that Cancún will become the first municipality in Mexico to implement a comprehensive biometric database for police identification. “These cameras cannot be manipulated, turned off, or erased. At the end of their shifts, officers place the cameras in a docking station where the data is automatically downloaded,” she explained.

The cameras will record officers’ actions in real time and integrate with a facial recognition system to verify each officer’s identity. “An officer arrives, undergoes facial recognition, and is assigned a camera number. When returned, all data is downloaded, and the camera can be reassigned,” the mayor detailed.

Funding and Implementation

The acquisition of the cameras, costing approximately 30 million pesos, was financed through the Environmental Sanitation Fee. Peralta de la Peña emphasized the devices were selected for their durability, battery life, and secure data storage.

She reiterated that all officers on patrol will be required to use the cameras, ensuring stricter oversight of law enforcement activities.

The initiative aims to increase transparency and public trust in local security forces.
