Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mexican environmental officials are urging residents of a Cancún neighborhood to keep their pets safe and take precautions at night after a mototaxi driver reported seeing a puma.
The driver called the 911 emergency line to report the sighting in Colonia Cuna Maya, according to the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (PROFEPA). Officials searched the area but did not find the animal.
PROFEPA staff spoke with residents and offered preventive advice to reduce the risk if the puma is seen again. Officials said surveillance will continue while authorities try to track the animal down.
What Residents Are Advised to Do
- Keep pets, especially dogs and cats, confined and under supervision.
- Avoid walking through the neighborhood alone at night; go with someone else.
- Make noise — by whistling or tapping a metal object, for example — to announce the presence of people.
The agency also agreed with a neighborhood group to hold a talk on preventive measures and on ways to encourage coexistence with wild animals.
Firefighters and personnel from the Benito Juárez municipal Ecology Department also took part in the response.
