Cancún Man Arrested in Connection With 24 Violent Store Robberies

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Police in Cancún have arrested a 30-year-old Tabasco native linked to 24 investigations into violent robberies at convenience stores and other businesses, the State Prosecutor’s Office announced.

The suspect, identified as Hugo N, was detained on streets in Supermanzana 66 during a surveillance operation carried out by State Police investigation agents and municipal officers. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, he was the subject of an arrest warrant for his alleged role in qualified robbery committed with violence.

Officials said the man is tied to 24 case files involving similar crimes against convenience stores and other commercial establishments. The robberies under investigation occurred between February and September, causing significant financial losses, though prosecutors did not disclose the total amount or identify the businesses affected.

Suspect Posed as a Customer, Authorities Say

Investigators said Hugo N entered stores posing as a customer. After briefly watching how the business operated, he would approach the cash registers and threaten employees with what appeared to be a bladed weapon, then take the day’s sales proceeds and valuable merchandise.

Following his arrest, the suspect was turned over to the appropriate authorities to proceed with the legal process tied to the arrest warrant. A control judge later ordered him bound over for trial on the charge against him and imposed preventive detention as a precautionary measure. He will remain in custody while the investigation continues.

Authorities said they are reviewing surveillance footage from the affected businesses as well as video captured by cameras belonging to the C5 security complex, material that forms part of the ongoing case file.
