Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Benito Juárez municipal government has launched a free support program for primary caregivers, offering emotional and physical assistance to those who care for sick, disabled, or dependent family members.
The initiative, led by the Municipal Secretariat of Benito Juárez Well-being and the General Directorate of Health, addresses what officials call an often overlooked reality: behind every patient is someone supporting their recovery, frequently at the expense of their own well-being.
Specialists have warned about “caregiver syndrome,” a progressive condition combining stress, exhaustion, and lack of personal space that frequently goes unaddressed. The program aims to provide concrete tools to prevent this burnout and improve both the caregiver’s and patient’s quality of life through comprehensive support including training, emotional containment, and community networks.
The program features practical training designed to address daily caregiving challenges, covering key topics such as:
- Self-care and stress management
- Effective communication and conflict resolution
- Physical and emotional care techniques
- Community support network building
- Grief process accompaniment
Sessions will take place at the CRIT Teletón Cancún, a facility with experience in comprehensive care. The program will include specialists in physical, mental, and social health to ensure complete support throughout the process.
Caregivers often neglect basic aspects of their own lives—medical appointments, rest, social life, and emotional stability—which can lead to anxiety, depression, or physical problems over time. The program seeks to break this pattern with a clear message: caring for oneself is essential to caring for others.
Beyond individual attention, the strategy also aims to strengthen the social environment. By improving caregivers’ conditions, home care quality increases and pressure on health services decreases. The program is open to anyone providing constant support to a family member or patient, regardless of whether the caregiving process is recent or long-term.
