Cancún is fast becoming a global hotspot for medical tourism, offering a range of specialized services, state-of-the-art facilities, and significant economic benefits. The thriving medical tourism industry in Cancún not only diversifies its traditional tourism offerings but also brings considerable economic and social advantages. The growth in this sector was showcased at the Second Cancún Medical Tourism Forum 2024, where specialists, institutions, and the municipal government collaborated. The event featured 35 stalls from medical and tourist service providers and 13 presentations on topics ranging from in-hotel care to emerging trends like bariatrics, demonstrating the destination's dedication to this expanding sector.

Growth and Services

Over the past decade, Cancún has witnessed substantial growth in its medical infrastructure. It currently houses over 7 high-specialty hospitals, 35 dental clinics, and 10 medical specialty clinics, as reported by Andrés Jurado, president of Coparmex Quintana Roo's Medical Tourism Commission. This growth is evident in the impressive numbers: in 2024, there was a 20% increase in patients, with between 20,000 and 25,000 visitors seeking medical treatments. These patients contribute an estimated annual revenue of 180 to 200 million dollars, due to stays that are four times longer than those of traditional tourists, with an average spending per person nearing 10,700 dollars.

Recognitions

Cancún has emerged as a leader in medical tourism, thanks to its competitive pricing and high-quality standards. Three of its hospitals have been awarded the prestigious Joint Commission International accreditation, and two have been certified by the Canadian Healthcare Council. These accolades position Cancún as a reliable option for international patients from key markets such as the United States and Canada, as well as South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. This growth not only benefits tourists but also the local population by providing quality medical services and supplementing the state government's public health efforts.

"Cancún is more than just a leisure destination; it's a place where health and well-being are integrated into the travel experience," stated Ana Paty Peralta, municipal president, during the Forum's opening. She emphasized that this sector's success is the result of strategic collaboration between the private and public sectors, working together to offer a comprehensive experience. State Secretary of Health, Flavio Carlos Rosado, representing Governor Mara Lezama, assured that partnerships between both sectors ensure high-quality medical services and reinforce epidemiological surveillance, benefiting both residents and tourists.
