Cancún, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities in Cancún led a civic ceremony on Saturday to mark the 220th anniversary of the birth of Benito Juárez, celebrating the historical legacy of the former president known as the “Benemérito de las Américas.”
The event took place at the Explanada de la Reforma in the Municipal Palace and included the laying of a floral tribute, the singing of the Mexican national anthem, and the Quintana Roo state anthem.
Civil and military officials, along with representatives from the Oaxacan community, participated in the tribute to honor Juárez’s life and work.
Ceremony Details
According to the Benito Juárez Municipality, the ceremony featured various public figures, including representatives from civil associations, municipal authorities, and military commanders.
In her address, the municipal president highlighted the values of justice, sovereignty, and respect for rights that characterized Juarist thought, quoting his emblematic phrase: “Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace.”
Legacy Relevance
The homage emphasized the importance of keeping Benito Juárez’s principles relevant today, particularly in a context where national unity and respect for institutions remain fundamental pillars.
Officials also recalled his role during key moments in national history, such as defending sovereignty against foreign intervention, which solidified his status as one of Mexico’s most influential leaders.
Authorities called on citizens to continue promoting civic values and to build a more just society, using the historical example of the national hero as a reference.
