Cozumel, Mexico — Entrepreneurs affiliated with the National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism (Canaco-Servytur) have emphasized the need to diversify Cozumel’s tourism offerings to mitigate the impact of low seasons.
Eduardo Morales Rivas, president of the business chamber, stated that this issue has been under discussion for years. Despite continued tourist arrivals, he noted that the economic spillover has diminished.
“For several years, we’ve been advocating for the diversification of tourism in Cozumel to attract different types of visitors and increase spending on the island,” Morales Rivas said.
He highlighted the necessity of expanding air connectivity and recovering lost domestic routes, as well as intensifying promotional efforts for the island’s natural attractions and cultural events.
Opposition to Reduced Workweek
Separately, Morales Rivas expressed disagreement with the reduction of the workweek from 48 to 40 hours, arguing that the financial burden of implementing this measure would be unsustainable under current economic conditions.
“We oppose this change because it’s applied too broadly. The needs of a factory are not the same as those of a small store with two employees,” he remarked.
The business leader warned that reducing daily working hours would force employers to hire additional staff, leading to higher operational costs.
