Tren Maya worker bus catches fire on Mexico highway

A burnt bus left on the roadside after a fire, showing significant damage to its structure and interior. One side reveals the charred remains, while the other displays the bus being towed away.

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A bus transporting workers for the Tren Maya project was engulfed in flames Friday morning along the Playa del Carmen-Tulum stretch of Federal Highway 307. Authorities confirmed no injuries were reported despite the vehicle being completely destroyed.

Incident Details

The fire broke out around 9:00 a.m. on June 6, 2025, as the bus, operated by the company Lipu, traveled along the highway. The driver and passengers—all Tren Maya employees—evacuated safely before the flames intensified. Emergency services, including municipal police from Playa del Carmen, National Guard highway patrol units, and firefighters, responded to 911 calls.

Firefighters contained the blaze, but the bus was declared a total loss. Personnel from Civil Protection arrived to investigate the cause, with preliminary accounts from workers suggesting an electrical short circuit may have sparked the fire.

Recent Accidents on Federal Highway 307

While major incidents have been less frequent in recent weeks, the highway has seen several serious crashes earlier this year. On March 17, a Playa del Carmen taxi driver died after colliding with a Honda SUV near the Moon Palace hotel in Puerto Morelos. Witnesses reported the taxi was speeding before the crash, which sent the SUV into roadside vegetation.

Other recent incidents include:

  • A fatal collision involving an Argentine woman between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
  • A van-versus-SUV crash that left 10 injured, mostly van passengers.
  • A single-vehicle rollover in Playa del Carmen attributed to the driver falling asleep at the wheel.

Authorities continue to monitor safety along the busy corridor as construction and tourism traffic remain high.
