Cancún, Mexico — A serious accident allegedly involving an employee transport bus caused significant damage to telecommunications infrastructure in central Cancún during the early hours of Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Avenida Tulum, near Superblocks 1 and 2, where the bus reportedly struck and knocked down two utility poles supporting Internet and telephone cables, as well as some structures belonging to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
The collapse caused immediate service interruptions for companies including Telmex, Megacable, Izzi, and Totalplay, leaving dozens of businesses and residents in the heart of the city without connectivity.
The emergency was reported to 911, and agents from Municipal Transit and the Police arrived at the scene to coordinate the response. It was reported that authorities proceeded to partially close the avenue for several hours while repair work and replacement of the collapsed poles were carried out.
Official responsibility of the bus has not been confirmed at this time, although witnesses claim to have seen an employee transport unit at the location. The bus is apparently owned by the company "Del Valle" or a similar firm.
Authorities have already launched an investigation to determine liability and whether the company involved will be sanctioned for the material damages caused.
