Tulum, Quintana Roo — The body of an unidentified person was discovered Wednesday afternoon in the vegetation of the La Veleta neighborhood, after residents reported a strong odor coming from the area.

Passersby found the corpse hidden in the underbrush and alerted authorities through the emergency number, according to initial reports.

Police officers arriving at the scene confirmed the body was in an advanced state of decomposition. Preliminary information indicated the victim was not wearing shoes.

Security personnel cordoned off the area while investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office carried out the necessary procedures and removed the body.

The victim remains unidentified, and authorities have not released the cause of death, which will be determined by an autopsy.
