Bacalar, Quintana Roo — Three hotels in Bacalar have been honored with the prestigious Michelin Key, an international distinction that positions this Pueblo Mágico (Magic Town) among the world’s most outstanding destinations for high-end boutique hospitality and tourism. The recognition signifies far more than luxury—it represents sustainability, authentic design, and deeply human experiences.
Among the recognized hotels, Casa Hormiga stands out for its ability to blend artisanal design, holistic wellness, and local identity with exceptional elegance.
Michelin Keys Attract Sophisticated Tourism
The Michelin Keys draw a discerning tourism demographic that values authenticity, character, and environmental commitment—values Bacalar has embraced in recent years through the collective efforts of architects, therapists, chefs, guides, designers, builders, and local families.
Despite this achievement, members of the southern state’s business sector have pointed out the need for greater visibility in the state’s tourism promotion strategy. They argue that such successes have yet to be proportionally incorporated into the official campaigns of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ).
For months, proposals have been submitted to formally integrate southern entrepreneurs into the design and dissemination of the state’s tourism image, including distinctions like the Michelin Keys. However, their inclusion has not yet materialized.
This international recognition confirms that the hospitality of southern Quintana Roo is world-class. Bacalar solidifies its position as a competitive destination in experiential, luxury, and sustainable tourism—proving it has what it takes to shine. Now, the challenge lies in ensuring its story is told.
