Bacalar Eco-Challenge: Boating Changes Coming Soon

The Seven Colors Lagoon in Bacalar, a major tourist hotspot, may soon see a significant shift in its regulations to safeguard its ecosystem. A proposal, supported by service providers and local authorities, suggests changing the current "rest day" for boating from Wednesday to Monday. Manuel Ciau Náhuatl, the head of the Tourism Commission, stated that the change aims to strike a balance between environmental protection and Bacalar's economic growth, as the lagoon is a vital revenue source for the community.

There's also a consideration to extend the boating suspension to two days a week. This potential change will be deliberated with boat operators and other stakeholders in the tourism industry. The goal is to lessen the impact of boating activities on the lagoon's ecosystem, thereby giving the area's biodiversity a chance to recover. Ciau stressed that this measure is intended to ensure the long-term preservation of this natural wonder while also providing a sustainable solution for tourism service providers.

Ciau, who is in favor of any initiative that aids in the conservation of the lagoon, said, "The Lagoon is the foundation of our economy, and we must protect it effectively." The proposal will be carefully reviewed with the region's key stakeholders before any final decisions are made.
