Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Just two weeks into the summer vacation period, the Municipal Directorate of Civil Protection in Bacalar has reinforced security operations at the Seven Colors Lagoon to ensure that nautical service providers adhere to safety measures and prevent accidents in the popular tourist destination.
Coordinated Efforts to Prevent Accidents
Marcelino Jiménez, Director of Civil Protection and Firefighters for the municipality of Bacalar, confirmed that authorities are working in coordination with the Port Captaincy and the State Civil Protection Coordination to conduct patrols along the lagoon. The goal is to remind boat operators to follow safety recommendations, including the mandatory use of life jackets, avoiding overcapacity on vessels, and exercising caution while navigating.
Jiménez emphasized that these measures aim to conclude the season without any incidents. While most local boat operators comply with the guidelines, some privately operated boats from other regions occasionally disregard safety protocols.
“Over the weekend, we toured the lagoon and reminded service providers about the importance of life jackets. Many assume they know the rules and skip wearing them, but our focus is on prevention,” Jiménez stated.
No Reported Incidents So Far
Authorities confirmed that no accidents involving nautical service users have been reported thus far, and tourist activities remain unaffected. However, officials reiterated the call for all operators to strictly follow safety regulations.
Approximately 400 boats operate in Bacalar Lagoon, offering tours to various points at different times based on tourist demand.
The intensified surveillance underscores Bacalar’s commitment to maintaining safety standards in one of Quintana Roo’s most iconic natural attractions.
