Bacalar Pushes Boat Rules to Save Lagoon and Tourism

A colorful boat with a canopy is docked on clear greenish water, with a wooden walkway nearby and thatched-roof structures in the background, under a blue sky with fluffy clouds.

Bacalar, Mexico — Following renewed discussions about establishing a Protected Natural Area around Bacalar Lagoon, Hermes Gómez Coyoc, president of the local Canaco delegation, confirmed that members are conducting a survey to gauge support for the measure and assess its potential benefits or drawbacks.

Survey Aims to Shape Consensus on Laguna Protection

Gómez Coyoc stated, “We are working on this and precisely conducting a census to provide an informed opinion on the scope of the proposal.” The initiative coincides with the start of the vacation season, during which local businesses anticipate increased visitor traffic due to new transportation routes linking Palenque to Bacalar and Bacalar to Cancún.

Municipal authorities have officially launched the holiday season, with optimism that economic activity will rise alongside efforts to safeguard the “Laguna de los Siete Colores” (Lagoon of Seven Colors) from the environmental impact of boat operations.

Gómez Coyoc emphasized the need for dialogue with officials to implement concrete measures regulating vessel use in the lagoon. “We will discuss what actions can be taken to prevent further harm to the lagoon,” he said.

The Canaco delegation’s efforts reflect broader concerns about balancing tourism growth with environmental preservation in one of Quintana Roo’s most iconic natural attractions.
