Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The comprehensive rehabilitation project for Avenida 10 will feature a reconfiguration of traffic lanes, dedicated bike paths, metered parking spaces, and the relocation of overhead wiring to underground infrastructure, according to local government officials.
Sustainable Mobility and Modernization Prioritized
Javier Renan Santos Morales, Sixth Councilmember and Chair of the Mobility Commission, confirmed that the redesign will maintain three lanes: one exclusively for vehicle traffic, another shared between bicycles and micromobility vehicles, and a third dedicated to metered parking. The layout will repurpose part of the current left lane, while the right lane and central median will be adjusted for vehicular transit.
Authorities also announced the removal of overhead wiring in favor of underground installations. Santos Morales emphasized that the introduction of parking meters will not conflict with the operations of the company Parquíneos, as parking spaces will remain available under the new configuration.
Strict Loading and Unloading Regulations
To accommodate local businesses, strict schedules will be enforced for loading and unloading supplies, particularly for light vehicles. Santos Morales stated, "Regulations for loading and unloading already exist. What’s needed now is enforcement. Businesses like the supermarket on Avenida 10 will need to use side entrances and adhere to the established hours."
Infrastructure Upgrades and Safety Measures
Juan Humberto Novelo Zapata, Thirteenth Councilmember and Chair of the Commission for Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Affairs, noted that utility providers will be required to remove overhead wiring and replace it with underground infrastructure before construction begins.
"Overhead wiring has already caused issues. On streets like 34 and 38, incidents occurred due to friction between power lines and covering materials. Companies must comply with regulations and obtain the necessary permits to use utility poles, whether from CFE, Telmex, or the municipality," he explained.
Oversight and Timeline
The Public Works Secretariat will oversee the project, ensuring both technical compliance and efficient execution. Officials acknowledged logistical challenges due to the holiday season and commercial activity in the area but pledged to minimize disruptions.
The redesign will span from Avenida Constituyentes to Avenida CTM and includes the planting of new trees to enhance shade and livability along the urban corridor.
Project Goals
Municipal authorities stated that the initiative aims to address the current deterioration of the roadway, promote non-motorized mobility, and organize public space usage in one of Playa del Carmen’s busiest areas.
