Cancún, Mexico — In the early hours of Monday, July 14, Sonia Vianey, a resident of Cancún’s Supermanzana 41, was murdered by her partner inside her home. The assailant, identified as Felipe Octavio, used a bladed weapon during an argument that ended in tragedy while her two minor children were present.
Authorities Respond to the Crime
The incident was reported to emergency services (911), prompting a response from the Specialized Group for Addressing Family and Gender-Based Violence (Geavig), part of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security. Upon arrival, a witness directly identified the man as the perpetrator. Paramedics later confirmed Sonia’s death.
Children Placed Under Protective Custody
Officers found the victim’s two children, aged five and 12, at the scene. Authorities immediately took custody of the minors and activated child protection protocols. The Office for the Protection of Children and Adolescents of the Benito Juárez DIF was notified to provide psychological support and follow up on the case.
Felipe Octavio, the alleged femicide perpetrator, also sustained injuries from the bladed weapon and received medical attention under police custody. He was detained at the scene and is now held by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutor Vows Swift Justice
State prosecutor Raciel López Salazar confirmed that an investigation has been opened for the crime of femicide. “We will apply all femicide protocols and work to expedite judicial proceedings,” López Salazar stated during a press conference. He emphasized that the suspect would face legal proceedings while in custody.
Another Femicide Reported a Week Earlier
This crime follows another suspected femicide in Cancún just one week prior. On the morning of July 7, a woman was found dead with stab wounds in the city’s Region 94. A man with injuries was also discovered at the same residence. That investigation remains ongoing.
