Mexico City, Mexico — Dr. Annie Pardo Cemo, professor emeritus at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), has been named the top scientist in Molecular Biology in Mexico, according to the 2025 Ranking of Best Scientists published by Research.com. Globally, Pardo Cemo ranks 1,163 in the classification, which evaluates leading researchers across scientific disciplines.
A Lifetime of Scientific Excellence
The recognition highlights Pardo Cemo’s five-decade career dedicated to research and teaching. Research.com’s ranking is based on data from platforms such as OpenAlex and CrossRef, utilizing the D-index, a metric that exclusively considers publications and citations within the evaluated field. This year’s ranking included 112 scientists from UNAM, underscoring the institution’s academic prominence.
Pardo Cemo leads the Laboratory of Pulmonary Biopathology in Fibrosing Diseases at UNAM’s Department of Cell Biology. Her work focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in fibrosing lung diseases, as well as the role of matrix metalloproteinases in chronic and degenerative pulmonary conditions. Her research has been instrumental in advancing understanding and potential treatments for these pathologies.
Institutional Pride and Accolades
UNAM celebrated the achievement on social media, stating: “We congratulate Dr. Annie Pardo Cemo, professor emeritus at the Faculty of Sciences, for being recognized as No. 1 in Molecular Biology in Mexico in Research.com’s 2025 global ranking.” The university emphasized her 50 years of academic and scientific excellence, calling her a “Pride of UNAM.”
The Faculty of Sciences also lauded her as Mexico’s top Molecular Biology scientist per Research.com’s ranking. Among her numerous awards are the Glaxo Wellcome Foundation Research Prize (1995), the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Recognition from UNAM (2012), and the National Science Prize in Physical-Mathematical Sciences (2023). Since 1980, she has held Level III status in Mexico’s National System of Researchers, one of the highest academic distinctions in the country.

Beyond her scientific contributions, Pardo Cemo is the mother of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Mexico’s president, adding a personal dimension to her public recognition. The Research.com ranking, now in its fourth edition, serves as a benchmark for assessing scientists’ impact in their fields.
