Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — A state police officer died after an ambush early Sunday morning on a rural road between the towns of Tepich and San Ramón.

The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. when a group of officers on a preventive patrol spotted a pickup truck reported as stolen.

As the officers exited their patrol vehicle to inspect the truck, attackers opened fire from the surrounding brush.

Sub-officer Alejandro Nicolás Jiménez sustained critical injuries and died at the scene, according to sources close to the investigation.

The other officers returned fire but could not locate the assailants. They activated an emergency alert and withdrew from the area near the village of Pino Suárez to transport their wounded colleague.

Authorities plan to launch inter-agency operations in the zone to find those responsible for the attack.
