Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The 31st National Information Week of Alcoholics Anonymous has begun with multiple locations in Playa del Carmen to address this disease affecting the population.
Anonymous members of the Quintana Roo Delegation presented information about what they aim to accomplish during these dates regarding a phenomenon that particularly affects younger people.
“We have collaboration agreements with the health sector because the high impact has overwhelmed authorities, and we take advantage of this start of the year, with the December holidays, New Year’s, when many people as a consequence of alcohol abuse begin to seek help, and we take that opportunity to help them, to start this week, and we’ve been doing it for 31 years,” explained Daniel D, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
In this way, members have begun distributing themselves in public places with the goal of providing information to people seeking to change their lifestyle and decide to attend the meetings held daily within this sector.
“Here in Playa del Carmen we have about 35 groups, we have three districts, and there are companions with tables at the health center, at Issste, we’re bringing books, brochures, leaflets,” added Daniel D.
The concern of the groups is evident because it has been detected that there is a prevalence of alcohol consumption at very young ages, such as adolescents, who consume these products clandestinely.
“There is certain misinformation at the national level, in some media, on social networks, but our services are free, we only respect anonymity in meetings that last up to an hour and a half every night, so people can come, they can be invited by someone from the health sector, we have psychologists, psychiatrists, we have alliances, like those from the Youth Attention Center, they send us people,” he added.
The only requirement to start in these groups is the sincere desire to stop drinking, recalled the member of the organization.
