Cozumel, Mexico — Approximately 50 cases of dengue have been confirmed in the municipality of Cozumel, according to information provided by Juan Antonio Dzul Cámara, the island's Deputy Director of Health.
In September 2019, the island experienced a similar crisis, confirming 43 cases of the classic type and 28 of the severe type, totaling 71 cases. In 2024, the number of positive cases in Cozumel was 111, though it was not detailed how many of these were severe.
In addition to the confirmed cases in 2025, there are another 200 patients presenting with symptoms, Juan Antonio Dzul alerted, before exhorting the population to cooperate with authorities in the fight against the mosquito that transmits dengue, the Aedes aegypti.
Although he did not speak of a crisis as such, he did acknowledge that in recent weeks there has been an increase in the number of people who have fallen ill. The most affected are minors between the ages of eight and 16, he specified, before adding that the good news is that all 50 confirmed cases are of classic dengue, which is less harmful than the hemorrhagic type.
He did not mention which neighborhoods in the city the patients are from and clarified that hemorrhagic dengue is now known as severe dengue.
Before concluding, he announced that the Cozumel Government, in coordination with the Government of Quintana Roo, is carrying out fumigation work to prevent the number of cases from advancing. However, it is necessary for island residents to cooperate from their homes by avoiding leaving junk and other objects in which water accumulates, providing the vector with a conducive environment for its development.
“If we do not have the help of the population eliminating breeding sites in their homes, this will be a difficult fight and it is possible that many more sick people will be reported. With any symptom, it is imperative not to self-medicate and to go to your health center or family doctor immediately. The population must be aware of the situation and take responsibility for the risk we run if we do not work together,” he concluded.
According to data from the Dirección General de Epidemiología (DGE) and the Sistema Nacional de Vigilancia Epidemiológica (SINAVE), there are four serotypes of the virus in Mexico, classified from DENV-1 to DENV-4, each with varying risks and serious complications.
The Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes are the transmitters through their bites and usually inhabit urban areas, feeding in the morning and afternoon, primarily.
