Progreso, Yucatan — Activists have prepared 30 tons of humanitarian aid for Cuba, including food, medicine, and technological equipment, which awaits departure from the fishing docks in Chelem, part of Puerto Progreso municipality. The shipment, described by organizers as carrying “hope and resistance against the criminal blockade imposed by the United States government,” is set to sail aboard the vessel Granma 2.0, named by the volunteer team.
The aid is expected to reach the island in approximately two days, depending on weather conditions in Mexican and Cuban waters. A group of 25 people, calling themselves the Flotilla Nuestra América, organized the effort.
Additionally, the flotilla announced that two sailboats loaded with three tons of support each will depart from Isla Mujeres on Friday, bound for Cuba.
Thiago Avila, a member of Nuestra América, stated that the mission aims to deliver humanitarian cargo and demonstrate solidarity at a time when “(Donald) Trump believes he is the world leader to do as he pleases.”
“We must tell that person (the U.S. president) a resounding no and combat his colonialist intentions with an internationalist spirit,” Avila emphasized.
Avila, who is also part of Global Sumud, an international organization providing humanitarian support to residents of war-torn countries, noted that Cuba has consistently shown solidarity with just causes, especially where the U.S. government has militarily intervened.
“We do not want to live in a world where (Donald) Trump believes he owns the world and only has bombs, weapons, wars, and his particular hatred for humanity to offer,” Avila added.
He reported that Mexican donations will be received by the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and distributed to the population, clarifying this to prevent speculation that items might be sold for personal benefit by government officials.
During the preparation of the shipment, activists briefly chanted: “Cuba yes, blockade no.”
