CHETUMAL, Quintana Roo — A motorcyclist was injured after being struck by a car on Avenida Insurgentes at the intersection with Universidad. The responsible vehicle, a Dodge Neon driven by a woman identified as an active-duty member of the Mexican Navy, struck the motorcycle from behind, projecting the rider onto the windshield and dragging the motorcycle for approximately 30 meters.
Witnesses reported that the driver fled the scene following the incident and was followed to the city center, where she abandoned the vehicle in front of the IMSS delegation on Chapultepec and 16 de Septiembre. She subsequently entered the facilities of the Eleventh Naval Zone, where she remained.
Police officers arrived at the scene to dialogue with naval personnel and request the woman's surrender. Fortunately, the motorcyclist sustained injuries that are not life-threatening.
Hours later, the Secretariat of the Navy, through the Mexican Navy and via the Eleventh Naval Zone, confirmed that the person responsible is an active-duty service member of the institution, who presented herself to the corresponding authorities in coordination with Municipal and State Transit Police.
"The Secretariat of the Navy deeply regrets the traffic incident that occurred. It is important to inform that the affected person is stable and out of danger, receiving the corresponding medical attention," the department stated in a communiqué.
Furthermore, the institution assured that it maintains permanent communication and solidarity with the motorcyclist's family, as well as with the medical personnel attending to the injured party.
Finally, it reiterated its commitment to act under the principles of legality, transparency, and respect for human rights, collaborating with the competent authorities for the proper clarification of the facts.
