Tourists arriving at Cancun Airport have voiced their discontent over fines of up to $200 imposed by customs for carrying more than one electronic device, such as laptops or tablets. Additionally, the airport has set a limit of three cell phones or wireless devices per person. Those who refuse to pay the fine are forced to surrender their confiscated items.
David Ortiz Mena, president of the Association of Hotels in Tulum, finds this situation astonishing, particularly as efforts are underway to attract more tourists. Ortiz Mena highlighted that the Covid-19 pandemic has given rise to a global trend of remote work, opening opportunities for extended tourism. However, he expressed surprise at the penalties imposed on visitors for carrying more than one electronic device.
Interestingly, American tourists do not face similar restrictions when departing their country, according to the TSA. The same applies to Canadians, who are allowed to bring as many devices as they want.
Ortiz Mena stressed the need to reassess this situation and the related legislation to prevent such negative impacts. He noted the increasing number of comments on social media about this issue, adding that "if we truly aspire to be a tourist hub, we need to ensure our policies are consistent."
