MAHAHUAL, Mexico — Following the conclusion of the purchase process for the Mahahual cruise pier, Royal Caribbean has announced it is preparing to submit the Environmental Impact Statement (Manifestación de Impacto Ambiental, or MIA) for its Perfect Day Mexico project in this same locality in southern Quintana Roo.
The cruise line stated in a project update video, "We have been working hard to understand the needs of employees, suppliers, and community members; we are also in the process of submitting the MIA through the official government channels."
The company emphatically added that it has not started any type of construction or "demolition" work, as it will first focus on socializing the project with the community through meetings to share details and "listen to the community for any comments they might have."
Royal Caribbean assured that it is already protecting 45 hectares of mangrove located on the property to be impacted. Furthermore, the company committed to working to protect the Mesoamerican Reef and announced investments to protect the coast from sargassum.
Finally, the company announced it will build a world-class wastewater and solid waste treatment system in Mahahual for the Perfect Day project. It also plans to install its own "water production system to ensure we are not depleting all local resources."
The purchase of the Mahahual pier was finalized after the cruise line received the green light from the now-defunct Federal Economic Competition Commission (Comisión Federal de Competencia Económica) to buy the port of Mahahual and 34 adjacent properties for 221 million dollars.
According to a document related to the authorization, "The project will trigger an economic spillover of more than 10.6 billion dollars over 22 years, with a direct impact on sales, productive linkages, and an increase in GDP."
