Cozumel, Mexico — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) celebrated the seventh edition of the Emerald Hummingbird Festival with great enthusiasm, bringing the community together to promote birdwatching and highlight the ecological importance of the Cozumel emerald hummingbird.

A Festival Uniting Community and Nature

The event attracted children, youth, and adults who actively participated in various environmental education activities. Through workshops, talks, and exhibitions, the FPMC promoted awareness of the island’s birdlife and emphasized the essential role of hummingbirds as pollinators, as well as their significance as symbols of local identity.

Conservation and Environmental Education Programs

During the festival, the Conservation and Environmental Education Department (CEA) set up informative workstations sharing bird protection initiatives. The event also featured the participation of Pajareando Cozumel, a group dedicated to monitoring and preserving local bird species.

A key highlight was the talk titled "Citizen Science in the Conservation of the Cozumel Emerald Hummingbird (Cynanthus forficatus)", delivered by Paulina Sabido Villanueva, head of the Environmental Education Department. In her presentation, she explained the unique characteristics of this endemic species, its habitat, and its crucial ecological role.

Complementing the activities, the Jóvenes por la Conservación (Youth for Conservation) group presented an artistic display reflecting the importance of environmental stewardship from a youth perspective.

A Commitment to Conservation and Environmental Education

FPMC General Director Juanita Alonso Marrufo emphasized that these initiatives strengthen the bond between the community and nature, aligning with the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.

Finally, Rafael Chacón Díaz, Director of the CEA, thanked local businesses, including Restaurante La Choza and Imprenta Lomas, for their collaboration in ensuring the festival’s success, demonstrating that collective efforts are vital for environmental conservation.
