Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo – Joseph (Joe) Madden Kozelj, a proud resident of Quintana Roo and Mexico’s reigning National Longboard Champion, is set to make history as the first athlete from Quintana Roo to represent Mexico at the prestigious 2025 ISA World Longboard Surfing Championship. The event is taking place from April 25 to May 1, 2025, at El Sunzal in Surf City, El Salvador.
The championship is expected to host a record-breaking 143 athletes from 44 nations, highlighting the global growth of longboarding. Notably, 69 women—comprising over 48% of competitors—will participate, reflecting the ISA’s commitment to gender equality in the sport.
Joe’s selection to the national team is a testament to his dedication and the support he has received from various organizations, including CODEQ (Comisión para la Juventud y el Deporte de Quintana Roo), CONADE (Comisión Nacional de Cultura Física y Deporte), the Federación Mexicana de Surfing A.C., and the Asociación de Surf de Quintana Roo A.C.
Beyond his competitive achievements, Joe contributes to the surfing community as the coach of the Nohoch Surf Team based in Puerto Aventuras and serves as the Technical Director of the Asociación de Surf de Quintana Roo. His involvement has been instrumental in nurturing young talent and promoting the sport within the region.
Joe extends his gratitude to Governor Mara Lezama, Playa del Carmen Municipal President Estefanía Mercado, and David “Jamaican” Hernández—Technical Director of the Federación de Surf de México and President of the Asociación de Surf de Quintana Roo—for their unwavering support.
