Cancún, Mexico — Eduardo Solís Preciat, a pioneering businessman in Cancún and a central figure in the Business Coordinating Council of the Caribbean, has died. His passing was confirmed on Saturday, April 19. Solís Preciat played a significant role in the development of the city and was widely recognized for his contributions to local business and infrastructure.
A Legacy of Leadership and Controversy
The news of his death was shared by Benito Juárez Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta, who expressed her condolences on social media.
“We deeply regret the passing of Lic. Eduardo Solís Preciat, a pioneer of Cancún and a reference point in the Business Coordinating Council and much of our city’s development. We extend our sincerest condolences and wish his family and loved ones strength during this difficult time. His legacy will live on in Cancún’s history,” Peralta wrote.
Solís Preciat was the founder of Grupo ABC and served as president of Coparmex (the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic) as well as honorary president of the Committee for the Reactivation of the City Center.
Despite his contributions to Cancún’s growth, his career was not without controversy. In August 2017, he was linked to former Quintana Roo Secretary of Government Gabriel Mendicuti Loría in cases involving land invasions and the excessive exploitation of construction materials.
In February 2020, he was formally charged with crimes including theft, land dispossession, and environmental violations, earning him the nickname “El Zar del Sascab” (The Sascab King). Later that year, he was placed under house arrest in Mérida, Yucatán, where he ultimately passed away.
Tributes from the Business and Political Community
The exact cause of death has not been disclosed, but several political and business figures in Quintana Roo have publicly expressed their condolences. Among them were Mildred Ávila Vera and Julián Ricalde Magaña, as well as organizations such as Coparmex Quintana Roo and the College of Civil Engineers of Yucatán.
Solís Preciat’s death marks the end of an era for Cancún’s business community, leaving behind a complex legacy of both achievement and legal scrutiny.
