Massive cleanup removes 291 kg of waste from turtle sanctuary

Volunteers collecting waste on the beach at Xcacel–Xcacelito sea turtle sanctuary

Tulum. — A total of 291 kilograms of waste were removed from the Xcacel–Xcacelito Sea Turtle Sanctuary Reserve during a cleanup event that brought together volunteers, environmental organizations, and institutions committed to protecting the coastal ecosystem.

The activity was part of the Xcacel–Xcacelito Collective Cleanup, coordinated by Tulum Circula, Parley, and strategic allies, who emphasized that this site is one of the most important nesting and hatching points for sea turtles in the Mexican Caribbean.

During the sweep, participants located debris carried by marine currents from multiple regions of the world, including plastics, ropes, containers, and micro-waste that pose a risk to the hatchlings currently emerging from their nests.

The organizers highlighted that these events aim to reduce coastal pollution, safeguard the ecosystem’s balance, and protect marine fauna, especially during a critical period for turtles that depend on clean beaches for their survival.

They also thanked the broad citizen response and indicated that community participation is fundamental to ensuring the conservation of the sanctuary, considered a natural heritage of the region.

They agreed that the protection of Xcacel–Xcacelito requires constant and shared efforts, not only to guarantee the reproductive success of the turtles but also to preserve a healthy environment for future generations.
