Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Five search operations conducted by the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) across multiple establishments in Chetumal resulted in the rescue of 26 women allegedly exploited in human trafficking for forced prostitution, the seizure of narcotics, and the arrest of three individuals for drug-related offenses. However, the operation has faced scrutiny over allegations of excessive force by authorities.
Coordinated Raids Uncover Exploitation and Narcotics
According to the FGE, the raids were executed after judges issued search warrants as part of ongoing investigations into illicit activities at bars and businesses in the Othón P. Blanco municipality. Authorities located women of various nationalities engaged in paid sexual services, with a portion of their earnings allegedly withheld by the establishments.
At a bar in the Adolfo López Mateos neighborhood, nine women—including one Belizean national—were rescued. Investigators also discovered substances resembling cocaine and surveillance equipment. Nearby, two men were detained for alleged drug possession.
A second operation at a bar in the 8 de Octubre neighborhood led to the rescue of 17 more women, some of whom were foreign nationals. Additional illicit substances and record-keeping ledgers were seized. Three other locations—two karaoke bars and a convenience store—were also raided, yielding more suspected cocaine doses and surveillance devices. All properties were placed under FGE custody.
Internal Investigation Launched Amid Allegations of Misconduct
The operation has drawn criticism from local business owners and residents, who allege excessive force, unjustified confiscation of private surveillance footage, and procedural irregularities during the raids. In response, the FGE announced an internal investigation to determine whether officers involved acted outside legal protocols.
The agency emphasized its commitment to ensuring law enforcement operations adhere to legal standards. Despite the rescues and seizures, tensions remain high between authorities and some Chetumal business owners, who have publicly questioned the tactics used during the raids.
The FGE has not yet disclosed further details regarding the detained suspects or the ongoing internal review.
