Nuevo León, Mexico — Dafne Naomy Reyes Pimentel, a 21-year-old woman from the municipality of Escobedo in the state of Nuevo León, is in the final stage of an international selection process to become one of six people who will travel to space through a mission organized by the North American company Blue Origin and its program Sera.
The competition, which prioritizes presence and reach on social media, has currently placed her in fourth position globally, highlighting her profile. A student of Robotics and Digital Systems Engineering at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Dafne is also preparing for entry into postgraduate programs.
Her passion for technology and space emerged in her childhood, but her path was not straightforward. She faced social pressures related to gender stereotypes, which initially led her to study Medicine. However, after one semester, she decided to return to her true vocation and changed her course to engineering, a decision that reflects her determination and love for the aerospace sector.
Her experience includes collaborations with personnel linked to NASA through an international program in 2022 and training in Florida for suborbital flights, where she learned about managing gravitational forces and survival techniques at extreme altitudes. She currently resides in Canada, where she combines aerospace research with her studies and applications for the space mission, preparing for the challenge of her life.
This interest in space not only symbolizes the individual achievement of a brilliant young woman but also reflects a change in the perception of gender in increasingly diverse and competitive technological and scientific fields.
