Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Isla Mujeres, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, has removed more than 130 tons of sargassum from Playa Norte as part of ongoing efforts to preserve the area’s renowned beaches. The cleanup operation was conducted by the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) department, targeting a 150-meter stretch of shoreline.

Swift Response to Sargassum Influx

Dayana Pérez Medina, Director of Zofemat Isla Mujeres, confirmed the arrival of over 130 tons of sargassum along Playa Norte. She emphasized that the municipal government has intensified cleanup efforts under Mayor Gómez Ricalde’s direct orders.

“By explicit instruction from the island’s mayor, we have redoubled our efforts to address sargassum influxes promptly and maintain clean, beautiful, and orderly beaches,” Pérez Medina stated.

She credited the daily commitment of Zofemat’s cleanup crews—referred to as “warriors”—for ensuring timely removal of the seaweed, allowing both residents and tourists to enjoy Isla Mujeres’ pristine shores.

The operation underscores the municipality’s dedication to mitigating the environmental and economic impacts of sargassum, a persistent challenge for coastal regions in Quintana Roo.
